Episode 85: A Great Start …

Winter Part One

Four Weeks Later.
Salim & Camilla’s Townhouse. | San Myshuno.

The new house, their new house, with it’s open kitchen and hanging pendant lights, backyard patio with brand new paving, master bedroom with built in window seats, closet space, on top of closet space, on top of closet space, everything, all of it, was just perfect for them. And to think, it wasn’t even what they were looking for. They had a goal, a simple one, really. Find a spacious two bedroom apartment somewhere in the city. That’s it. As long as it was, bigger than Salim’s in the Arts Quarter, nicer than Camilla’s in the Spice Market, far away from the quakes and all night parties in the Fashion District, and way under the price of the ridiculously expensive housing in the Uptown area, it was what they wanted. They didn’t have a long list of must-have amenities either, just two bathrooms, washer/dryer connections and maybe a balcony or some sort of outdoor space.

Once they started looking though, they realized that finding exactly what they wanted wasn’t simple at all. So, after two whole weeks of frustrating searches and disappointing showings, when this three bedroom, two and a half bath townhouse, with everything they wanted and more, just happened to became available, they jumped right on it. Well … maybe not right on it.

Camilla, excited: This is it Salim! This is the one! We have to get this house!
Salim: Not for this price we don’t.
Camilla, disappointed: You’re not even going to think about it?
Salim: I don’t need to. [moves her along]

The price was more than what they agreed on, a few hundred dollars more, and that … was a problem for Salim. It was a nice house, he couldn’t deny that, but he didn’t like the idea of going so far over their budget. Granted, they were both working and could afford the rent together, but he had other obligations outside of Camilla and didn’t want his finances spread too thin. Besides, there were other places out there, townhouses even, well within their budget. They just needed to keep looking and eventually, they would find one.

Camilla, on the other hand, was done looking. She had fallen completely in love and wouldn’t give up so easily. There may have been other townhouses out there, but she didn’t want another townhouse, she wanted that townhouse. On top of that, she was sick of house hunting and living out of boxes. She wanted to get back to their life, their new life together and that was where she wanted to do it.

Camilla: Pleeeeaaaase, Salim?
Salim: [sighs] Remember how we talked about budgeting and saving?
Camilla: [pouts]

It took a couple of days, but eventually, she got him to say yes. Even negotiated new furniture as part of the deal. It was easy too, once she pointed out all the reasons the house was perfect for the girls to grow up in, promised to stop eating out every single day and agreed to cancel at least three of her ten mail order subscriptions, she had him. To make her case even stronger, Aahana had been putting pressure on them to pick a place. She had this crazy, unrealistic fear that the babies would end up lost in boxes or something if they weren’t moved in and unpacked by the time it was his turn to get them again, so Camilla made sure to remind him of that too.

Salim: [sighs] Why do I spend the most money when we’re together?
Camilla: [jumps on his back] I don’t know, but I do know you’re going to love this house, it’s just something about it. [squeals] We’re going to be so happy here! You’ll see!

She was right too, there was definitely … something about that house because as soon as they got settled, she become a whole different person. It’s like at some point between her leaving her apartment and moving into the townhouse, she lost the key to her sex drive and it was running nonstop. The only thing that could keep her off of him, those days, were physically leaving the house or the twins being over, but as soon as they got back or the twins went down for a nap, she was ready to pick up where they left off.

Salim: [attempts to get out of bed]
Camilla: [climbs on top of him] Where do you think you’re going?
Salim: To the bathroom?
Camilla: [pushes him back down] It can wait.

Naked Gnome Agency. | San Myshuno.

She was so far off into honeymoonland that nothing else in the world seemed to matter anymore, that is, until … she was called into the office for an unscheduled meeting.

When she arrived, she was seated in the conference room by the receptionist who was unusually quiet. Any other time, she would talk her head off about various family drama, but that day, she would barely look at her. Something must be wrong

Before she could really process that thought, her boss, Anika, entered the room and seated herself directly across from Camilla.

Anika: [smiles politely] Hi Camilla. It’s been a good minute since I’ve seen you. How’ve you been?
Camilla: [smiles nervously] I’m good, just been busy [voice trails off] moving and everything.
Anika: Oh moving! That’s always fun with the packing and the unpacking. [scoffs] Who am I kidding, it’s a freaking nightmare. [chuckles]
Camilla: [chuckles lightly]
Anika: Well, I don’t want to keep you too long, so why don’t we get right to the point of this meeting.
Camilla: Okay …
Anika: [exhales] I … like you Camilla. You’re always so nice whenever you come in the office, and your work, outstanding!
Camilla: Thank-
Anika: [holds hand up] Hold on. Your work is outstanding … when you actually do it. Lately, there’s been more than a few projects that you’ve taken on and either finished after the deadline or didn’t bother to finish at all.

Okay so … she may have neglected work, just a little, while she was off in honeymoonland, but she was planning to make up for it that week, that weekend. Everything would be done that weekend.

Camilla: I know- I’m sorry … I’ll have everything done by Monday.
Anika: Yeah … that’s … not going to work. I’m sure you understand that for a business like ours, our reputation is everything, so we can’t have our freelancers not completing projects when they’ve already committed to them, so with that being said, we’re going to have to let you go.

  1. Oh no, oh no, oh no, everything was going so well and then this :/ I mean she was buzzing along! They were finally together in their own place, he passed her mom’s test, she was able to get his ex off of her for a moment, and now…this…and it’s a pricier place too :/

    1. I know!! It’s the worst possible timing but that is a common theme that runs throughout this entire story unfortunately, lol, but I’m still rooting for them!

  2. I can relate to this moving situation. I was like Camilla, and had my heart set. My husband responded similarly and I eventually got a home we both love. I’m so sad she’s losing her job. They just got their new place

    1. I know, it’s terrible timing, but I hope she can at least find something else, maybe even something she enjoys, soon.
